Our Lady of the Milk Weed Plant

Writer: Francie McGlynnFrancie McGlynn

I'm old.

But when I was a very small child playing in the dirt while my mother hung her laundry on the line Monarch Butterflies fluttered around us as thick as raisins in porridge. Even with my clumsy toddler fingers I remember reaching out and catching them.

But the butterflies have disappeared. I'm lucky now if I see one or two a year. The reason is because the Monarch caterpillar eats one thing - the leaves of the milkweed plant and the milkweed plant has almost disappeared due to urban spread and pesticides.

The good news is that people are making a great effort to plant Milkweed.

This bird's nest assemblage is an honouring of the Milkweed plant.

The Goddess who rests inside the nest has a body made from a milkweed pod.

Blessing on all who scatter the seeds of the milkweed.
